I have performed detailed coefficient of friction tests on various types of clock bearings including plain pivots jewels and ball bearings. Ball bearings have fifty time less friction than plain pivots. My testing is quite scientific and uses a stop - start technique as exhibited by clock trains. The use of hybrid ceramics ensure no "adhesive wear" due to micro welding of like metals in contact. Use without lubrication for longest life and lowest friction.

Bearing are being used to reduce friction in mechanical clocks. This has meant that less weight is required and therefore less wear on the clock
